He played in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) for both the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and the Oshawa Generals before being drafted in the third round by the Washington Capitals in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft.

In 2012, Simpson returned to Ottawa, this time to the airwaves, joining TSN 1200 where he became a staple voice in Ottawa’s sports media until 2023.
