In a series of dramatic border breach events at Canada’s southern border , one man has died, and fifteen others were apprehended in three separate incidents that have rocked the peace of the Canada-U.S. border region.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) outlined these harrowing tales during a press conference in Edmonton, shedding light on the perilous realities of illegal border crossings under harsh winter conditions.

Deadly Chase at Coutts Border Crossing
The first and most tragic incident unfolded at the Coutts Border Crossing in southern Alberta.
On February 4, 2025, a man driving a vehicle into Canada bypassed secondary inspection, setting off a chase that would lead to his untimely demise.
Border officers, alerted to the evasion, coordinated with local RCMP, who followed the man from Raymond to Lethbridge and back, a journey spanning over 115 kilometers.
The pursuit ended near Milk River when police used a tire deflation device to stop the vehicle.
The driver then fled on foot, but tragically, during the chase, he inflicted a fatal gunshot wound upon himself.
Assistant Commissioner Lisa Moreland confirmed this somber outcome, noting, “During the pursuit, the male sustained a self-inflicted firearm related injury and was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has now taken over the investigation, looking into the circumstances that led to this desperate act.
Families on Foot: A Cold Crossing
The day prior to the lethal chase, another chilling scene unfolded near Coutts at approximately 6:15 AM when four adults and five children were discovered crossing the border on foot.
These individuals, inadequately dressed for the freezing Canadian winter, were caught with suitcases in tow.
Moreland highlighted the dire situation, stating, “They did not have hats, gloves, mitts, or anything that we would normally see in a Canadian winter.”
All nine were detained under the Customs Act and handed over to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) for further processing.
The extreme cold, with temperatures ranging from -20 to -30 degrees Celsius, underscored the perilous nature of their journey.
Manitoba’s Border Breach
Rewinding to January 14, another group of six was intercepted near Emerson, Manitoba, after crossing the border 15 kilometers east of the official crossing.
Alerted by U.S. authorities, the RCMP swiftly responded, employing both ground and aerial units to track down the group hiding in nearby woods.
All were arrested without incident and turned over to CBSA.
Humanitarian and Security Concerns
These incidents bring to light not only security concerns but also the humanitarian crises at play.
Assistant Commissioner Moreland emphasized the RCMP’s dual focus: “We address the humanity piece first, and the RCMP is continuing the investigations associated to these matters.”

Despite these measures, no drugs, specifically fentanyl, were found in connection with these border incidents.
Moreland issued a stern warning: “To anyone who is thinking about crossing the border, don’t.
You’re putting your life at risk, and you should not attempt under any circumstances.”
