CRA adds optional security step for 2027 tax filing

The Canada Revenue Agency will introduce an optional account-authentication step for online tax filing beginning February 22, 2027. The measure will apply to individuals, authorized representatives, tax preparers and volunteers using NETFILE or EFILE.

cra tax filing: CRA adds optional security step for 2027 tax filing

CRA tax filing will include a new optional account-authentication step beginning February 22, 2027, as the Canada Revenue Agency moves to add another layer of protection to online income-tax and benefit-return submissions.

The CRA announced the change on September 22, 2026, saying the process will be available to individuals, authorized representatives, tax preparers and volunteers who use the agency’s NETFILE or EFILE services.

Cra Tax Filing: What is changing for online tax filing

Under the new process, users can sign in to their CRA account while filing or adjusting a return through compatible tax software.

The sign-in step is intended to confirm the identity of the person initiating the filing and help establish whether they are submitting a return for themselves or on behalf of another taxpayer.

The CRA says the authentication option is designed to help prevent unauthorized filings and fraudulent returns, while adding protection for personal and financial information.

Authentication will remain optional for 2026 tax returns, giving taxpayers and filing professionals the opportunity to use the process before any future changes are considered.

What taxpayers using NETFILE need to know

Individuals and authorized representatives can use NETFILE through certified tax software to send personal income-tax and benefit returns to the CRA.

When submitting a 2026 return through NETFILE, a taxpayer can choose to sign in to a CRA account as part of the authentication process.

Authorized representatives can also authenticate themselves, but taxpayers should ensure their representative has the proper authorization before the return is filed.

The CRA’s representative-authorization system allows taxpayers to add or confirm representatives through their CRA account.

First-time filers who have no previous filing history will not have access to a CRA account for this purpose and will not be able to choose the authentication option when filing their first return.

Those taxpayers can still file through NETFILE, and an authorized representative may be able to file on their behalf and complete the authentication step.

How the EFILE process will work

EFILE is used by approved tax preparers and other eligible electronic filers to submit clients’ income-tax and benefit returns to the CRA.

When filing a 2026 return through EFILE, the filer can choose to authenticate by signing in to a CRA account.

For EFILE users, the CRA says authentication confirms the identity of the person initiating the filing transaction.

It does not require that person to be an authorized representative of the taxpayer whose return is being submitted.

Volunteers participating in the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program will follow the same authentication process as other EFILE users.

Once authentication is completed, the filer can continue submitting returns while the session remains active.

The CRA says another authentication will be required only after that session ends.

What taxpayers should do before the 2027 tax season

The CRA is advising taxpayers and representatives to check their account access before the new filing season begins.

  • Register for a CRA account if one is not already available.
  • Resolve any account lock, restriction or access problem before filing.
  • Review personal information stored in the account and update it when necessary.
  • Add a backup multi-factor-authentication method where available.
  • Confirm that any tax representative is properly authorized before a return is submitted.

These steps are not a new tax requirement, and the optional authentication process does not change the tax information that must be reported.

They are preparation measures intended to reduce delays if a taxpayer decides to use the new account sign-in option.

Why the change matters for tax and benefit processing

Income-tax returns are used to calculate or reassess access to several federal benefits and credits, which means an unauthorized or fraudulent filing can affect more than a taxpayer’s tax balance.

Adding an account-based identity check may give the CRA another way to verify who is submitting or adjusting a return.

The change also gives taxpayers more control over whether they use an additional security check when filing their 2026 returns.

Taxpayers who cannot access a CRA account will still be able to file through the existing electronic channels, subject to the normal NETFILE or EFILE requirements.

The CRA has not announced that authentication will become mandatory for all online filings.
