Fact-Checking Policy

Our fact-checking process is designed to reduce avoidable errors in the dates, amounts, eligibility rules and claims that matter most to readers.

Primary-Source First

For government benefits, taxes, immigration, regulations and public programs, we prioritize official departments and agencies, statutes, regulations, government notices, court records and other first-party documentation. A search result, social post or AI output is not treated as a substitute for the underlying source when the primary document is available.

Dates, Amounts And Eligibility

Payment dates, dollar amounts, deadlines, thresholds and eligibility rules receive extra scrutiny because small errors can have practical consequences. We check the effective date and, when relevant, whether a rule applies federally or only in a particular province, territory or municipality.

Immigration And Government Rules

For immigration and citizenship coverage, we distinguish current rules from proposals, temporary measures, operational guidance and announced future changes. We prioritize official IRCC, ESDC, CBSA, provincial or other responsible-government material when available.

Company And Consumer Claims

For recalls, retailer changes, fees, products and company policies, we look for company notices, regulator records, filings or other direct documentation. Marketing claims and statements from interested parties are attributed rather than presented as independently verified conclusions.

Breaking News

When facts are still developing, we distinguish confirmed information from preliminary reports and update coverage as reliable evidence changes. Speed does not eliminate the need to identify where a claim came from.

Automation And AI

AI and automated systems may assist with monitoring, extraction, drafting and formatting, but they are not factual authorities. Important claims should be traceable to published evidence. If an automated process introduces an error, the article is eligible for correction under the same standards as any other content.

Reader Feedback

Readers can flag a factual concern through our Contact page. Specific URLs and supporting documentation help us review a claim more quickly.
