nigeria: Nigeria edge Guinea-Bissau in AFCON 2027 qualifier

Nigeria defeated Guinea-Bissau 1-0 on Tuesday, September 29, to remain perfect after two matches in Group L of the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying campaign.

The result gave Nigeria six points from six available and handed Guinea-Bissau its first defeat of the group stage.

The match was played at Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro in Bissau, with the fixture scheduled for a 4 p.m. GMT kickoff by the Confederation of African Football.

Nigeria takes narrow lead into the break

The only goal came in the first half, with match-centre data listing Guinea-Bissau defender Opa Sangante as the player involved in the 36th-minute scoring event.

Nigeria protected the advantage through the second half as Guinea-Bissau pushed for an equalizer.

The final score continued Nigeria’s strong recent record against Guinea-Bissau, although the latest meeting was again decided by a single goal.

Nigeria builds on opening-day comeback

Nigeria entered the match after recovering from an early deficit to beat Madagascar 2-1 in the opening round of fixtures.

Guinea-Bissau also began the campaign with three points, winning 2-0 away against co-hosts Tanzania.

CAF identified the two teams as the early leaders in Group L before Tuesday’s meeting, with Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau each sitting on three points.

The group’s other match on Tuesday ended with Madagascar and Tanzania sharing the points, leaving both sides still searching for their first win of the qualifying campaign.

Osimhen absence remains a storyline

Nigeria was without Victor Osimhen for the opening two qualifiers as the striker continued his recovery from a muscle injury.

CAF reported that the Nigeria Football Federation had ruled Osimhen out of the matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau after he suffered a strain in his right thigh while playing for Galatasaray.

His absence placed additional responsibility on Nigeria’s other attacking options as the Super Eagles began their push for a place at the 2027 tournament.

What comes next in Group L

The next scheduled Group L fixtures will see Madagascar face Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria meet Tanzania in November.

CAF’s qualifying schedule lists the 2027 tournament for Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027.

With two wins from two matches, Nigeria has established an early advantage, while Guinea-Bissau will need points from its remaining fixtures to stay in contention for one of the group’s qualification places.
