Boeing 747 becomes interim Air Force One

A modified Boeing 747-8 has entered U.S. presidential service as the VC-25B Bridge, giving the Air Force an interim Air Force One while the long-term replacement aircraft is completed.

boeing 747: Boeing 747 becomes interim Air Force One

A modified Boeing 747-8 has entered service as an interim Air Force One, giving the U.S. president a new presidential aircraft while the long-term replacement for the existing fleet remains under development.

The aircraft, known as the VC-25B Bridge, arrived at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland in June 2026 after modifications, flight testing and the addition of a red, white and blue exterior, according to a U.S. Air Force announcement.

The U.S. Air Force said it began commissioning flights to validate the aircraft’s safety, security and communications systems before active presidential missions.

Boeing 747 enters presidential service

The Boeing 747 used for the bridge mission is a 747-8i previously configured for a foreign head of state.

The Air Force accepted the aircraft from Qatar and selected L3Harris to carry out modifications needed for secure presidential operations.

Boeing provided engineering support for structural work linked to the aircraft’s integration into the military fleet.

On July 1, 2026, President Donald Trump flew aboard the newly commissioned aircraft on a trip to Medora, North Dakota, for the dedication of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library.

The Air Force described the flight as the aircraft’s first operational mission transporting the president, as shown in an official Air Force video.

The callsign Air Force One is used for any U.S. Air Force aircraft carrying the president.

The aircraft itself is designated VC-25B Bridge, distinguishing it from the permanent VC-25B aircraft being built to replace the current VC-25A fleet.

Why the Air Force needed an interim aircraft

The bridge aircraft is intended to reduce pressure on the two ageing VC-25A presidential aircraft, which have faced increasingly demanding maintenance cycles.

The Air Force said the temporary platform is meant to preserve reliable presidential airlift while the long-term Boeing programme moves forward.

The existing VC-25A aircraft are heavily modified Boeing 747-200Bs that entered presidential service in the early 1990s.

The replacement programme calls for two specially modified Boeing 747-8 aircraft with upgraded electrical systems, secure communications, medical facilities, executive spaces and other mission equipment.

The VC-25B Bridge is not simply a standard commercial aircraft with a new paint scheme.

Before entering service, the Air Force assessed the used airframe for technical risks, established supply and maintenance support, and trained pilots and maintainers on the 747-8 platform.

What happens to the long-term Air Force One programme

The bridge aircraft does not replace Boeing’s permanent VC-25B programme.

Instead, it provides an operational stopgap while the two purpose-built presidential aircraft continue through a delayed development and modification process.

The Air Force said in May 2026 that the accelerated bridge effort had helped move the estimated delivery of the permanent Boeing VC-25Bs forward by about a year from an earlier revised schedule, with delivery then expected in 2028, according to its announcement that the Bridge aircraft programme had completed flight testing.

The bridge aircraft is intended to remain useful until those aircraft are ready.

Government auditors have previously identified design problems, modification rework and workforce challenges as factors affecting the VC-25B schedule.

The programme involves transforming commercial 747-8 aircraft into secure presidential command platforms, a process that requires extensive communications, defensive, electrical and interior modifications.

A broader role for the 747-8 fleet

The Air Force’s bridge effort also created a training and sustainment base for the wider 747-8 presidential fleet.

An Atlas Air 747-8 freighter was used for early pilot and maintainer training, while former Lufthansa 747-8 aircraft were acquired for crew training and parts support.

That approach matters because Boeing ended production of the 747 after delivering the final aircraft in early 2023.

The Air Force and other operators must therefore rely on existing airframes, specialized maintenance and available parts as the remaining 747-8 fleet continues flying.

For now, the newly commissioned 747-8 gives the president another secure long-range aircraft and gives the Air Force more flexibility during maintenance of the VC-25A fleet.

The next major milestone will be the delivery of the permanent VC-25B aircraft, which are expected to assume the long-term presidential airlift role once their modifications and testing are complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Boeing 747 being used as Air Force One?

It is a modified Boeing 747-8i designated the VC-25B Bridge and used as an interim presidential aircraft.

When did the interim Boeing 747 first carry the president?

Its first operational presidential flight took place on July 1, 2026, when Donald Trump travelled to Medora, North Dakota.

Who previously operated the Boeing 747-8i?

The aircraft had previously been configured for a foreign head of state and was accepted by the U.S. Air Force from Qatar.

Is the VC-25B Bridge the permanent new Air Force One?

No. It is an interim aircraft while two purpose-built Boeing VC-25B aircraft continue through development, modification and testing.

Why did the Air Force need an interim presidential aircraft?

The bridge aircraft helps reduce pressure on the ageing VC-25A fleet while maintenance demands increase and the permanent replacement programme remains delayed.
