The Toronto Maple Leafs opened their first road trip of the season by building a three-goal lead, then watched the Vegas Golden Knights fight back before winning 4-3 in a shootout at T-Mobile Arena early Friday morning.

Toronto led 3-0 in the opening period, but Vegas answered with three consecutive goals across the first and second periods to force overtime.

After neither team scored in the extra frame, Braeden Bowman converted the decisive shootout attempt for the Golden Knights.

Maple Leafs seize control early

The Maple Leafs needed only 34 seconds to open the scoring.

Jack Roslovic finished a passing play set up by Auston Matthews and Kirill Marchenko to give Toronto an immediate advantage.

Easton Cowan doubled the lead at the 3:20 mark, with Chris Tanev recording the assist.

The goal continued Cowan’s strong start to the season after the young forward had moved into Toronto’s second-line arrangement for the Vegas matchup.

Nick Paul then made it 3-0 at 8:37.

Darren Raddysh and Gavin McKenna collected assists on the goal, giving Toronto an early cushion against a Vegas team that entered the game with a 3-1-0 record.

The Golden Knights finally broke through late in the period when Mark Stone scored at 17:36.

Jack Eichel and Ivan Barbashev assisted on the goal, cutting the deficit to two before the first intermission.

Vegas completes the comeback

Vegas carried its momentum into the second period.

Brett Howden scored 1:12 into the frame, with Mitch Marner and William Karlsson assisting to make it a one-goal game.

Jack Eichel tied the contest at 3:58 of the second period on an unassisted goal.

The comeback erased Toronto’s early advantage and set up a scoreless third period.

Toronto had opportunities to reclaim the lead, but the Maple Leafs could not solve Adin Hill again in regulation.

Vegas also failed to beat Toronto’s goaltending after Eichel’s equalizer, sending the game to overtime.

Shootout decides tight finish

Neither side scored during the three-on-three overtime period, leaving the decision to the shootout.

Kirill Marchenko scored for Toronto in the skills competition, while Braeden Bowman replied for Vegas.

Bowman’s attempt ultimately stood as the difference as the Golden Knights took the extra point.

The result gave Vegas another win over Toronto after the Golden Knights swept last season’s two-game series, including a 6-5 overtime victory in Las Vegas and a 6-3 win at Scotiabank Arena.

First road test for Toronto

The Maple Leafs entered the game with a 2-2-0 record after opening the season with four home contests.

Toronto had also rallied from a three-goal deficit to defeat the Nashville Predators 5-4 in overtime on October 6.

That Nashville comeback featured Gavin McKenna’s first NHL goal and an overtime winner from Auston Matthews.

Against Vegas, Toronto produced another strong opening but could not protect the lead.

The game also marked another meeting between Toronto and former Maple Leafs winger Mitch Marner, who joined Vegas during the off-season after nine seasons with the franchise.

Marner assisted on Howden’s second-period goal.

What comes next for the Maple Leafs

Toronto continues its three-game western road trip after returning from Las Vegas with one standings point.

The loss moved the Maple Leafs to 2-2-1, while Vegas improved to 4-1-0.

The Golden Knights will remain at home to face the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday, October 10.

Toronto’s next listed home game is against the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday, October 15.

For the Maple Leafs, the immediate lesson is familiar: the offence generated enough early pressure to build a comfortable lead, but defensive execution and game management will need to improve if the club is to turn those starts into wins on the road.
