Leylah Fernandez has advanced to the third round of the Wuhan Open after defeating Chinese qualifier Han Shi 6-3, 6-4 on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

The Canadian, ranked 25th in the world, recovered from a difficult stretch in the second set by winning the final five games to close out the match.

Fernandez converted the opportunity in one hour and 31 minutes, according to the official tournament scoreline.

Leylah Fernandez controls the deciding stretch

Fernandez made the stronger start and took the opening set 6-3 against the 21-year-old Shi, who entered the main draw as a qualifier.

Shi responded in the second set and built a 4-1 lead, putting Fernandez under pressure as the Chinese player looked to extend her unexpected run on home soil.

Fernandez then changed the momentum with more aggressive returning and steadier play in the longer exchanges.

The Canadian won five consecutive games from that point to complete the straight-sets victory.

The official statistics showed Fernandez winning 77 per cent of points behind her first serve and saving seven of eight break points.

She also converted three of four break-point opportunities, while Shi won only one of eight chances against Fernandez’s serve.

A notable run for Han Shi

Shi arrived in the second round after upsetting 13th-seeded Alexandra Eala in the opening round.

That victory was Shi’s first win over a top-20 opponent and helped make her one of the early stories of the Wuhan tournament.

The 217th-ranked Chinese player was competing in only her second WTA 1000 main draw, but she pushed Fernandez throughout the match.

Shi’s run ended against an opponent with considerably more experience at the top level, including a 2021 US Open final appearance and a career-high ranking of No. 13.

Fernandez faces Jelena Ostapenko next

Fernandez will meet Jelena Ostapenko in the third round.

Ostapenko advanced after defeating second seed Jessica Pegula 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-3 and saving three match points in the second-set tiebreak.

The winner of the Fernandez-Ostapenko match will move into the Wuhan quarter-finals.

Ostapenko’s power and first-strike style will present a different test for Fernandez than the extended rallies and court coverage used by Shi.

Fernandez entered Wuhan with momentum after winning the Singapore title late last month.

She also reached the third round of the National Bank Open in Toronto earlier this season, where she recorded a top-10 win over Mirra Andreeva.

What the result means for Fernandez

The Wuhan result gives Fernandez another deep run at a WTA 1000 event during the closing portion of the 2026 season.

She opened the tournament by defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round.

Fernandez is now two wins away from matching her best result at the Wuhan Open, a round-of-16 appearance recorded in 2024.

Her next match against Ostapenko will be a test of whether she can maintain the late-match composure that carried her past Shi.

For Canadian tennis fans, the result continues a strong season for Fernandez, who has added a Singapore title and several significant wins to her 2026 campaign.
