deerfoot trail: One person killed in Deerfoot Trail collision

Deerfoot Trail was closed in southeast Calgary on Tuesday, October 20, after a person was struck and killed near 17 Avenue S.E.

Calgary emergency crews were called to the northbound lanes at about 1:10 p.m. after reports that a person had been hit by a vehicle.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

What happened on Deerfoot Trail

Police said the victim appeared to have pulled onto the right shoulder to change a flat tire on a truck.

Investigators believe the person was then struck by another truck and trailer that was changing lanes to exit the roadway.

The driver involved remained at the scene, according to police.

No additional injuries were reported in the initial emergency response.

Northbound lanes closed near 17 Avenue

All northbound lanes were closed between Peigan Trail and 17 Avenue S.E. while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene.

The closure created delays through southeast Calgary, with motorists directed away from the affected section and advised to use alternate routes.

The roadway was reopened later Tuesday after the collision investigation and cleanup were completed.

Drivers travelling through the area on Wednesday should still check current traffic conditions because Deerfoot Trail remains affected by ongoing construction and changing lane arrangements in parts of the corridor.

Police investigation continues

The Calgary Police Service traffic unit is investigating the circumstances of the collision.

Police have not publicly identified the person who died.

The investigation will examine the movements of both vehicles, the roadside stop and the lane change before the impact.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has relevant dashcam footage can contact Calgary police at 403-266-1234.

Roadside safety reminder

A vehicle breakdown on a high-speed roadway can quickly become dangerous, particularly when traffic is moving at freeway speeds.

Drivers who can do so safely should move as far from active lanes as possible, turn on their hazard lights and call for roadside assistance.

People should avoid standing beside a disabled vehicle or attempting repairs close to moving traffic unless there is no safer option.

If leaving the vehicle is necessary, drivers and passengers should move behind a barrier or well away from the roadway when it is safe to do so.

Deerfoot Trail construction context

Deerfoot Trail is undergoing a multi-year improvement program involving interchange reconstruction, bridge work and lane changes.

Current work includes projects around Glenmore Trail, Southland Drive, Bow Bottom Trail and Anderson Road.

The City of Calgary says the broader Deerfoot Trail improvements are expected to continue into late 2027.

Motorists should follow posted speed limits, watch for temporary lane alignments and leave extra time when travelling through active work zones.
