maple leafs: Leafs fall 5-2 to Flames as Gridin scores twice

The Maple Leafs lost 5-2 to the Calgary Flames on Monday night, ending Toronto’s four-game winning streak during the second game of a four-game Western Canada road trip.

The game was played at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary on October 26, 2026, with the result recorded in Toronto early Tuesday, October 27.

Matvei Gridin scored twice for Calgary, while Mikael Backlund, Joel Farabee and Martin Pospisil also found the net.

Easton Cowan and William Nylander replied for Toronto.

Maple Leafs fall behind early

Calgary took control in the first period with two goals in less than two minutes.

Gridin opened the scoring at 10:05, beating Sergei Bobrovsky on a wrist shot after a setup from Martin Pospisil and Simon Nemec.

Backlund doubled the lead at 11:50 when he finished a play involving Matt Coronato and Farabee.

The Flames extended their advantage just 25 seconds into the second period.

Gridin scored his second of the game on a power play, with Zayne Parekh and Devin Cooley credited with assists.

That goal gave Calgary a 3-0 lead and put Toronto in a difficult position against a Flames team that entered the game having won three straight.

Cowan and Nylander bring Toronto back

Easton Cowan got the Maple Leafs on the board at 12:54 of the second period, redirecting a shot to cut Calgary’s lead to two.

William Nylander then made it a one-goal game at 6:06 of the third period.

Jack Roslovic and Auston Matthews assisted on the goal, which gave Toronto a chance to complete another comeback after its 7-2 win over Edmonton on Saturday.

The Maple Leafs could not find the equalizer, however.

Calgary protected its lead through the final minutes before Farabee and Pospisil scored empty-net goals to seal the result.

Calgary finishes a perfect homestand

The victory completed a four-game homestand sweep for the Flames and extended their winning streak to four games.

Devin Cooley stopped 26 shots for Calgary, while Bobrovsky made 30 saves for Toronto.

The loss dropped the Maple Leafs to 7-5-2 on the season.

Toronto had entered the game on a strong run, beating the New York Rangers, Columbus Blue Jackets and Edmonton Oilers in its previous three games after also defeating San Jose.

The defeat also halted a stretch in which Toronto had scored 18 goals across its previous three victories, including seven against Edmonton.

What comes next for Toronto

The Maple Leafs remain on the road and are scheduled to face the Seattle Kraken on Wednesday, October 28, before continuing the trip against Vancouver on Thursday, October 29.

Toronto will have to regroup quickly after allowing Calgary to build a three-goal lead and converting only two of its 26 shots into goals.

The next meeting between the Maple Leafs and Flames is scheduled for January 26, 2027, at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.
