Elias Pettersson: Canucks overcome 5-2 deficit

Vancouver trailed 5-2 midway through the third period before mounting one of the most dramatic comebacks of its season.

Jamie Oleksiak cut Anaheim’s lead to 5-3 at 12:54 of the third period, but A.J.

Greer restored the Ducks’ three-goal advantage 31 seconds later.

Jonathan Lekkerimäki then changed the game.

The young forward scored twice in 49 seconds, first cutting the deficit to 5-4 at 17:14 before tying the contest at 5-5 with 1:57 left in regulation.

Both of Lekkerimäki’s late goals came with Vancouver’s goaltender pulled for an extra attacker.

The second came on a screened shot from above the left faceoff circle.

Brock Boeser also contributed a goal and two assists, while Liam Öhgren scored Vancouver’s first goal of the night.

The Canucks also benefited from two Anaheim own-goal deflections during the game.

Pettersson provides key support

The two assists moved Pettersson’s season total to 13 points through 14 games, according to the official game statistics.

His playmaking helped Vancouver generate the pressure needed to force overtime after the Ducks appeared to have control.

Hronek ended the game after Anaheim was assessed a penalty that left Vancouver with a two-player advantage.

His shot from the point beat the Ducks with 11 seconds remaining in the extra period.

A needed result for Vancouver

The Canucks entered the game with a 0-9-1 record during their losing streak.

The stretch had pushed the club near the bottom of the NHL standings and created an urgent need for a response on its two-game California road trip.

Vancouver’s defensive issues remained visible in Anaheim.

The Ducks scored four times during the second period and led 4-1 before the Canucks began their comeback.

However, the Canucks’ late pressure produced four consecutive goals, including the two empty-net goals by Lekkerimäki and Hronek’s overtime winner.

Anaheim received two goals from Greer, along with goals from Jeff Malott, Beckett Sennecke and Leo Carlsson.

Jackson LaCombe recorded three assists, while Sam Colangelo had two.
