zelda: Zelda Ocarina of Time remake arrives on Switch 2 Thursday

The zelda series returns to one of its most celebrated adventures this week as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launches exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

Nintendo describes the release as a version of the classic game built from the ground up for its newer console.

The company says it includes overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue and symphonic orchestral music.

Zelda Ocarina of Time release date and platform

The game will be available on November 5, three days after the newsroom date of Monday, November 2.

It is listed as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, with television, tabletop and handheld play supported.

Nintendo’s Canadian store page lists Canadian French among the supported languages, alongside English and several other language options.

The game is designed for one player and supports save-data cloud functions through Nintendo Switch Online.

The release is part of Nintendo’s plans for the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda.

The original game was released in Japan in 1986, and Nintendo has been staging anniversary-related promotions and products throughout 2026.

What is new in the Ocarina of Time remake

The underlying story remains familiar.

Young Link must travel through Hyrule, confront Ganondorf’s attempt to obtain the Triforce and become the Hero of Time while moving between different periods in the kingdom’s history.

Nintendo’s updated version adds modern presentation and control features intended to make the decades-old adventure more accessible to new players.

The company has highlighted updated camera movement, enhanced controls, the ability to jump and dash during parts of the action, and fully voiced story scenes with additional dialogue.

The game also introduces the Hall of Fallen Heroes.

Players can view statues representing defeated monsters and return to certain encounters for rematch battles, creating an additional challenge beyond the main quest.

Another new feature uses the Nintendo Switch 2 microphone.

Players can hum a melody learned by Link or play it on an instrument, allowing the system to recognize the tune and trigger the corresponding in-game response.

ZELDA NOTES and anniversary accessories

The game supports ZELDA NOTES, a service available through the Nintendo Switch App on compatible smart devices.

Nintendo says the service can track accomplishments, offer location-based challenges and provide an additional way to play an ocarina.

Some features require a Nintendo Account, a compatible device and an ongoing internet connection.

Nintendo is also releasing an Electric OCARINA OF TIME accessory on November 5.

The electronic toy is designed to work with the game’s sound-recognition feature, includes free-play and auto-play modes, and can play 12 in-game songs through its automatic setting.

It is not a conventional musical ocarina and does not include the game software.

Two new amiibo figures based on Young Link and Young Zelda are planned for 2027.

Nintendo says they will unlock masks with a retro graphical style, while existing The Legend of Zelda amiibo figures can provide other in-game extras.

How the release fits into Zelda’s next chapter

The launch gives Nintendo a major Zelda release during the franchise’s 40th-anniversary year while the company continues preparing a live-action film adaptation.

Nintendo announced in September that the film will be titled The Legend of Zelda and is planned for worldwide theatrical release on April 30, 2027.

The film is being produced by Nintendo and Arad Productions, directed by Wes Ball and co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Nintendo’s announcement identified Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link.

Nintendo has not announced a release date for the next wholly new mainline Zelda game in the official materials reviewed for this report.

The immediate focus is therefore the Switch 2 version of Ocarina of Time, followed by the film’s planned 2027 theatrical debut.

What players should know before launch

  • Release date: Thursday, November 5, 2026.
  • Platform: Nintendo Switch 2 only.
  • Mode: Single-player adventure playable in TV, tabletop and handheld modes.
  • Key upgrades: Overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music and updated controls.

For longtime fans, the release revisits one of the franchise’s defining games with a modern presentation. For newcomers, Nintendo is positioning it as a more accessible entry point into the series while keeping Link’s journey through Hyrule at the centre of the experience.
