Brian Burke will enter the Hockey Hall of Fame as a Builder on Monday, November 9, joining the 2026 class during an induction ceremony in Toronto.

The former NHL general manager and team president is being honoured alongside players Patrice Bergeron, Carey Price, Pekka Rinne and Keith Tkachuk, as well as former United States women’s player Cindy Curley.

Brian Burke’s Hockey Hall of Fame induction

The Hockey Hall of Fame’s 2026 induction celebration runs from Saturday, November 7, through Monday, November 9, with the formal ceremony scheduled for the final day.

Burke was elected in the Builder Category after a management career that included senior roles with the Vancouver Canucks, Hartford Whalers, NHL head office, Anaheim Ducks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames and Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Hall announced the class on June 22, 2026, following the annual meeting of its Selection Committee in Toronto.

From Vancouver to a Stanley Cup

Burke began his NHL management career in 1987 as Vancouver’s vice-president and director of hockey operations.

He became general manager of the Hartford Whalers in 1992 before moving to the NHL’s head office the following year as senior vice-president and director of hockey operations.

Burke returned to Vancouver in 1998 as president and general manager, where he played a central role in the 1999 NHL Draft transactions that gave the Canucks the second and third overall selections.

Vancouver used those picks to select Swedish twins Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin, who later became franchise icons and Hockey Hall of Fame inductees.

Burke’s most prominent team achievement came with the Anaheim Ducks, where he served as executive vice-president and helped guide the organization to its first Stanley Cup championship in 2007.

Toronto chapter remains part of Burke’s story

Burke later became president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, holding the position from 2008 to 2013.

His Toronto tenure remains one of the most closely examined parts of his career, and Burke has acknowledged that he would approach some decisions differently if given the opportunity to start again.

He subsequently served as president of hockey operations with the Calgary Flames and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Although his executive record includes difficult stretches, the Hall’s decision recognizes the full scope of Burke’s work across NHL management and hockey administration.

Advocacy beyond the front office

Burke’s influence on hockey also extends beyond team-building and league operations.

From August 2023 until March 3, 2025, he served as executive director of the Professional Women’s Hockey League Players Association, the union representing PWHL players.

He also founded the You Can Play project in honour of his late son, Brendan, with the initiative focused on challenging homophobia and promoting inclusion and safety in sports.

Those efforts are part of the broader legacy being recognized as Burke enters the Hall as a Builder.

What happens next

The 2026 induction weekend continues in Toronto on November 8 before the ceremony and celebration on November 9.

Burke will be formally recognized with the rest of the class at the Hockey Hall of Fame, located at Brookfield Place in downtown Toronto.

The induction gives Burke a place in the same institution as the Sedin twins, his former Vancouver draft picks, and former mentor Lou Lamoriello, who entered the Hall as a Builder in 2009.
