Quebec Election: What voters need to know
Eligible voters must be Canadian citizens, at least 18 years old on October 5, 2026, resident in Quebec for at least six months and registered at their home address on the electoral list.
Voters must also show one accepted piece of identification, such as a Quebec driver’s licence, Quebec health insurance card, Canadian passport, Indian status card or Canadian Forces identification card.
The yellow reminder card mailed before the Quebec vote identifies the voter’s polling location and polling subdivision.
Voters can also use the Elections Quebec website to find where they are assigned to vote if they do not have the card with them.
A new electoral map is in effect
This election is being held under a new electoral map with 127 divisions, compared with 125 seats in the previous map.
The changes include the creation of Bellefeuille in the Laurentides and Lanaudière regions and Marie-Lacoste-Gérin-Lajoie in Estrie and Centre-du-Québec.
Boundaries were also adjusted in parts of Capitale-Nationale, Laval, Montérégie, Outaouais and Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean.
Because of those changes, some voters may be assigned to a different division or polling location than in the 2022 election.
Why 64 seats matters
A party would need 64 of the 127 seats to hold a majority in the National Assembly.
A party winning fewer than 64 seats could still form a government, but it would need to negotiate with opposition parties to pass budgets and survive confidence votes.
The number of seats won, rather than the province-wide popular vote alone, determines which party can form the government under Quebec’s electoral system.
When results will be available
Elections Quebec’s preliminary results will begin appearing after the polls close at 8 p.m., once ballots are counted.
The results shown on election night are preliminary and become official after the formal validation of the vote, which generally takes place after election day.
Advance voting had already drawn approximately 1.6 million voters, or 25.59 per cent of registered electors, by October 1, according to the province’s chief electoral officer.
That figure was higher than the 24.8 per cent advance-voting rate recorded in the 2022 provincial election.
What happens after the vote
The party that can command the confidence of the National Assembly will form the next government.
If one party reaches the 64-seat threshold, it will have a majority government.
If no party reaches that threshold, the next government will need support from other elected members on key votes.
The first results may offer a clear indication of the overall balance of power, but close contests could take longer to resolve as polling stations report their counts.
