canucks oilers: Canucks visit Oilers in Saturday night Western showdown

The Vancouver Canucks visit the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night in Edmonton for the third meeting between the Pacific Division rivals this season.

The Canucks Oilers matchup begins at 9 p.m. Mountain Time at Rogers Place, or 10 p.m. Eastern, with Vancouver looking to rebound from a 6-2 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday.

Edmonton also enters the game after a defeat, falling 5-4 to the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday to open a four-game homestand.

Canucks and Oilers split first two meetings

The teams have exchanged high-scoring victories in the first two games of the season series.

Vancouver won the season opener 6-5 in overtime at Rogers Place on September 29, while Edmonton answered with a 9-7 victory at Rogers Arena on October 1.

The first two games produced 27 goals, setting up another potentially open contest between two teams with very different early-season profiles.

Edmonton entered Saturday with an 11-3-3 record and an NHL-best 4.12 goals per game, according to the club’s game preview.

Vancouver was 3-14-1 and had allowed 4.61 goals per game, the highest rate in the league.

Projected lineups for Canucks Oilers

Vancouver is expected to use Leevi Meriläinen in goal, with Kevin Lankinen projected as the backup.

The projected Canucks forward lines have Arshdeep Bains skating with Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser, while Liam Öhgren, Marco Rossi and Linus Karlsson form the second line.

Jake DeBrusk, Paul Cotter and Jonathan Lekkerimäki are projected for the fourth line, with Filip Hronek, Jamie Oleksiak, Zeev Buium, Tom Willander and Luke Schenn on defence.

Thatcher Demko remains out with a hip injury, while Filip Chytil is listed with an upper-body injury.

Edmonton is projected to start Devon Levi, who is expected to return after missing seven games with an undisclosed injury.

Connor McDavid is projected between Vasily Podkolzin and Leon Draisaitl, while Zach Hyman is expected back after missing five games with a neck injury.

The Oilers’ projected defence includes Mattias Ekholm and Evan Bouchard, followed by Ryan Shea, Connor Murphy, Shakir Mukhamadullin and Ty Emberson.

Edmonton holds the special-teams edge

The Oilers’ power play has converted 33.9 per cent of its opportunities, ranking third in the NHL entering the game.

Vancouver’s power play was operating at 21.4 per cent, but its penalty kill sat at 63.3 per cent, among the league’s lowest marks.

Edmonton has also been particularly effective early in games, outscoring opponents 21-8 in the first period.

The Canucks have been outscored 27-14 in opening periods and will need a stronger start to avoid chasing the Oilers at Rogers Place.

McDavid and Pettersson lead the matchup

McDavid enters the game as Edmonton’s central offensive threat after extending his season-opening point streak to 17 games against Anaheim.

Pettersson, Boeser and Hronek have been among Vancouver’s more productive players in recent games, while Öhgren has scored four times over his previous five outings.

Boeser leads active Canucks skaters with 37 career points against Edmonton, while Pettersson has recorded 26 points in 31 games against the Oilers.
